Carrier Launch and Crash

Not 100% sure what happened here. This pilot seems to have ditched his fuel tank or a bomb but still loses it and ejects. Anyone know wtf causes this?

H.R.H. King Lerxst (09:48:31) :

I saw this on a programme about U.S. carriers. The A-6 Intruder had engine problems and didn’t have enough power to generate enough speed. Therefore the wings couldn’t provide enough lift to keep the plane up.

The fuel tank was jettisoned and the pilots ejected right before they went in the drink. Seems like the nav/bombardier in the right seat was killed.

correct, except - no one was killed.
after launch and with both engines at full power the plane failed to gain altitude, in an effort to gain altitude the spare fuel tank was jetisoned when it still failed to climb the pilot and bombadier ejected.
they were close to the water but thats ok since the a-6 has a 0,0 ejection seat.
( a 0,0 ejection seat works at zero miles per hour and at zero feet of altitude).
i guess it really ruined their day.
